Hitting the Waves

Growing up in Southern California, most people assume I know how to surf.  I wish this were true because then I’d feel a whole lot cooler.

You see, I’ve always had this thing with water and a fear of drowning.  It might have something to do with this one time when I dove into a lake’s swimming area and flipped under the dock for a little longer than was comfortable.  Or maybe it was the time I tried snorkeling and instead inhaled a healthy dose of ocean water.  I’ll say this about the experience: as pleasant as Hawaii is, ocean water is still ocean water, and it doesn’t belong in my lungs.  Period.

Now that I’ve lived outside California for years and am finally moving back, I decided it’s time to hit the waves.  Don’t get me wrong: I’m still terrified.  But now that I’ve put “learn to surf” on my bucket list, it’s official and I have to go through with it.

I will learn to surf.

Sidenote: Speaking of surfing, I picked up the latest issue of Vogue not only because I think Blake Lively is awesome (Apparently she’s my celebrity doppleganger.  I think this is a large bit generous), but because her photo shoot was done in my hometown, where she also took a lesson from local surf icon Rob Machado!  I’m weirdly geeking out about it, and I don’t even surf.  Yet.

Anyway, come August I can’t wait to slip back into my comfy California style and lie contentedly on the beach—I mean, surf!  I’m going to surf.  Right.  It’s going to be scary, but I think it’s also going to be fun and at least I can say I did it.  And maybe, just maybe, I can look cool while doing it.

Okay who am I kidding?  I’m going to look ridiculous, but at least I’ll be fashionably decked out, courtesy of Becker Surf.  And it won’t have to break my wallet, thanks to the great Becker Surf coupons and deals found online at coupon-gurus.com.

Once I’m suitably suited up (har-har, I know), I’ll get serious about hitting the waves.  Seriously.  Now that it’s out there in cyberspace I’m committed.

Wish me luck—I’m going to need it!

Now if only I could get a surf lesson with Rob Machado…
